Living in Albuquerque
Some of the enchantment that we've discovered...
Waking up to a rainbow colored hot air balloon hovering out the window.
Mild salsa has a different degree on the hotness meter in New Mexico ( even the ketchup is spicy)
Hanging red peppers on the wall is a manditory decoration.
Blue tailed lizards (aka Skink or whiptail) are our favorite little desert friend.
Road runners of the great bird of New Mexico. They are graceful in the air and fast on the land. They hunt fish and desert grub.
The Rio Grande is not the ocean. But you can still chuck rocks in it and that's what matters to Micah.
Kids play with Tumble weeds like a giant PE ball. Roll down the slide, chase it across the field, just beware if its coming at you on the road!
The Sky is beautiful. The clouds at sunset display vivid colors and at night the lighting show is electrifying! It is a challange to capture a picture of the lighting when kids are jumping on you. I got one, you'll have to check it out. The lighting far out performs the fire works show. Nature is dazzling.

The new tradition for labor day is to go out and buy a pot or pan. The Wilson family knows about this. Dan must have heard about it, too. He came home with a non-stick pan for cooking eggs. Eggs seem to be a pan's worst nightmare, quickly turning any nonstick pan to junk. Dan’s theory is to buy the cheapest pan ever and see how long it lasts compared to an expensive pan. So far he’s cooked some chicken in the pan and I have burnt a bunch of pancakes.
Dan is a soccer coach now. He’s got a lot of supportive parents that all know each other. They come with their chairs, their bug spray, and their stories. The boys like to follow Dan’s uncooth drills and enjoy his extrodinarily unique way of training. He’s got them walking like ducks and doing things bare footed. He even had a clip from karate kid ready to show and inspire the his little team.
Bryce enjoys soccer. He learned many of the terms from his 1 ½ week soccer camp over the summer. Bryce is very driven toward a goal (or more specifically, a reward). Bryce is our chameleon. His every emotion can be read on his face by the color under his freckles. He can turn red in a blink of an eye. Something about soccer gets the firey color reaction occurring very often. He does not like to lose. We think kids soccer is about as good of therapy has we can come up with for combating over-competivitness.
Letters, letters everywhere. Nicole is very interested in the shapes of letters. Everyday we work together in a preschool book from Costco. Most of the book is about letters and writing letters. The back half of the book has different subjects like math, science, and thinking about our world. I have a little desk set up in the craft room with a print out of the alaphabet on the wall and some pencils and crayons. She loves to go in there and work away. She is writing her name. She go a bit carried away with the bumps on the N so this week her name has been Micole.
She likes to make little goodies for our neighbors and pass them out. Last week was little tangerines. She counted them out and put them into egg carton carriers. She then put these oranges into a plastic bag. Then she spent 20 minutes drawing circles onto colored paper and cutting the circles out for cards. I was told to write on each circle. “ Hello, I like to share my favorite snack with you. Have a happy day. Love, Nicole.” The neighbors were very pleased to receive her gift.
What is in Micah’s hand? Must be a hot wheels car. He likes to walk around the house saying Vrrrm, vrrrrm, beep, beep. His favorite thing is to drive the cars on bumpy surfaces like the underside of a tuperware. He has had a cold this week and so is big on his naps. When I lay him down in the crib he points to the stereo and says, “on.”
Friday I woke up early to go biking, but my biking partner wasn’t up so I took the dark streets to the mile loop trail at Mariposa park. I rode the bike really fast around the running path. After watching the Olympics I feeling like trying harder at everything. I was pretending I was in the velodrome race track. Pretending there were people in the bushes ready to jump out at me helped to peddle even faster.
Besides getting a pan on labor we spent the day moving dirt from one spot to another. Dan got to play karate kid when he knocked a one-ton boulder flat on its side with a jump kick to give access to the lower terace. I sewed a black backdrop for the photo studio and hung that up today. I took a moment to play some rythyms on the drums which are set up in the workshop. I don’t know what I am going to do with my drum playing right now, but I happy to just jam now and then.
Sunday is going well the kids have been trained well to raise their hands and sit reverently in Sharing time. They are so reverent in fact, is almost throws me off. The older kids said they LIKE singing. Usually the older kids catch on that we are singing the same bunch of songs to prepare for the program. This group doesn’t mind a bit. Our program will be Sept. 28, with a practice and pancake party on the Friday before.
Lots of love,
The Albuquerque Allens
